Shaving Heads, Splendid Shops & Virtual Walks!

We’ve always been astounded by the incredible kindness and generosity of the St Peter & St James Hospice community, but this past year – more than ever – has highlighted just how compassionate and generous people can be.

In honour of our lovely supporters across Sussex and beyond, we publish a monthly round-up celebrating some of our hospice community heroes: a snapshot of just a few of the brilliant people making our work possible. We would love to say a heartfelt thank you to this month’s heroes, and also extend this outwards to the hundreds of others who stand with us in being there for local families living with terminal illness.

The fabulous Nurse Kuli Martin from the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath raised an amazing £1268.25 for us by shaving her head in June last year! She had seen our emergency appeal everywhere and wanted to help us out – and so she did just that! Well done Kuli, and thank you!

The wonderful Wivelsfield Stores, our local village shop on Wivelsfield Green, has been an enormous help to our kitchen over the last year. They donated bread and milk to us on a daily basis as well as top-ups on other food supplies when we were in need. There were days, particularly during the height of the pandemic, when we simply would not have got by without them, so a huge thank you goes out to their team on our behalf!

The brilliant Emma Cleary and her friends have raised over £1000 for us so far by getting together to ‘walk’ from Ditchling to Wuhan in China! Emma is a good friend and supporter of the hospice and wanted to raise some money to support us through lockdown; her group had already undertaken a walking challenge and collectively combined their walking mileage together to see where they ended up. They managed to walk the distance of Land’s End to John O’Groats in two weeks, and so decided to virtually walk the 5,536 miles between Ditchling and Wuhan, where COVID-19 originated. Excellent job ladies, we’re very grateful for your efforts! Thank you!

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everybody featured in this month’s hospice community heroes round-up, we are always blown away by your selflessness and bravery and are incredibly thankful for every single donation.
