Alicia works as an Assistant Manager across our much-loved Lewes charity shops, having started with us as a volunteer. here she shares how a chance encounter sparked a new passion and a new career.
‘After many years living abroad, I moved back to Lewes recently. I was shopping on the high street a few months back with my sister-in-law and we wandered into the hospice charity shop. There was lots of beautiful clothing and accessories she wanted to try so as the shop was busy I went into personal shopper mode. I was in and out of the changing rooms with different dresses, chatting away and making sure we didn’t leave any mess. The lady working in there, Sue, jokingly asked if I wanted a job.
‘We got chatting and Sue explained she was desperate for volunteers. I’d never contemplated volunteering before but when the idea was put to me I was excited by it. After working in management in the travel sector for years I was ready for something new and felt it would be a great way for me to meet people locally. I started volunteering the following week!
‘I loved my time volunteering – I became part of a lovely team, met wonderful customers each day and felt I was making a difference. The hospice is an amazing place in a beautiful setting and those I know who have experienced the care have only sung its praises. All profits from the shops directly support the wonderful work of the hospice.
‘When the vacancy arose for an Assistant Manager, I had to go for it. I was enjoying my volunteering role so much and had lots of transferable skills from previous work as well as the direct experience from the shop itself. I was thrilled when I got the job! If you’re looking to get back into work, progress your career or work in a new field, volunteering really can present fantastic opportunities.
‘I love every day of my job. I’m amazed by what big business the charity shop sector is and I’m so excited about the future here.’
