Ian started volunteering in 2010 and has fulfilled many roles in his time here, as well as being a driver. He drives ‘patients’ to attend their sessions at the Living Well Centre so his knowledge of the hospice is invaluable enabling him to put patients at ease and answering their questions.
We asked Ian about his typical day volunteering:
“Before collecting a patient for the first time I would receive an email from the Living Well Centre detailing the name, address and any specific needs: for example requires a wheelchair to be transported, has a portable oxygen cylinder, any mobility issues etc.
A typical day would start by picking up the keys and completing a check list in the vehicle. When collecting the patient, I am aware of any special needs, whilst allowing the patient to be as independent as possible. On arrival at the hospice I would accompany the patient into the Living Well Centre and hand over to another volunteer. On returning home I would ensure the patient is safely in doors before leaving.
So that we can offer transport to any prospective attendee who can’t get to the hospice any other way we need a core of regular drivers for fixed days – Monday to Friday and a number of bank drivers to be called on as necessary. Without this resource we cannot make the most of our team and activities at the Living Well Centre.
It is worth noting that for many of our attendees, the weekly visit is the only time they leave the house!
