Education and training
We're fully committed to supporting the development of palliative care skills for non-specialist healthcare staff. We provide professional placements and training events on end of life care issues. If you have any educational enquiries, we'd love to hear from you.Get in touch
We run GP workshops approximately twice a year. Within these sessions, attendees are taught about symptom control and will learn to apply knowledge to clinical situations using interactive seminars. Doctors can also arrange to shadow our Consultant-led medical team on the inpatient ward for up to a week in length to gain clinical expertise. GP registrars may apply for attachments during their practice year. Through international links overseas, doctors are also welcome to come for training attachments.
Our hospice Consultant and Senior Speciality Doctor have wide experience of teaching in palliative medicine. The hospice participates in the regular teaching of medical students from Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
At St Peter & St James Hospice, we encourage our Healthcare Assistants to do their NVQ training. There are several modules that nurses can choose that relate directly to the specialised field of palliative care.
We provide three days of internal mandatory training for all nursing staff held monthly throughout the year. Many trained nurses are involved in continuing professional development via local universities, completing appropriate modules and degrees in palliative care.
