Education and training
We're fully committed to supporting the development of palliative care skills for our staff and non-specialist healthcare teams. We provide professional placements, offer shadowing and provide all internal staff with a mandatory training programme. If you have any educational enquiries, we'd love to hear from you.Get in touch
We encourage the on-going training of our nursing and medical team and are passionate about playing our role in the development of future doctors and nurses.
Doctors can arrange to shadow our Consultant-led medical team on the inpatient ward for up to a week in length to gain clinical expertise. GP registrars may apply for attachments during their practice year. Through international links overseas, doctors are also welcome to come for training attachments.
Our hospice Consultant and Senior Speciality Doctor have wide experience of teaching in palliative medicine. The hospice participates in the regular teaching of medical students from Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
At St Peter & St James Hospice, we encourage our Healthcare Assistants to do their NVQ training or the Care certificate. There are several modules that nurses can choose that relate directly to the specialised field of palliative care.
We offer a full programme of internal mandatory training for staff, including interactive online courses and face to face workshops. Many trained nurses are involved in continuing professional development via local universities, completing appropriate modules and degrees in palliative care. Our nursing and care staff are also encouraged to adopt a ‘link role’, for example nutritional care, dementia training or infection control.
