Celebrating 50 Years of Care

St Peter & St James Hospice Launches Anniversary Appeal

This summer, St Peter & St James Hospice is marking a remarkable milestone, 50 years of compassionate, expert care for people living with life-limiting illness and those close to them. Find our more about the care we provide.

“We’re incredibly proud to celebrate 50 years of hospice care,” says Amanda Fadero, Interim Chief Executive. “But it’s just as important that we look forward. We need the continued support of our community to help us write our next chapter.”

The hospice supports communities across Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill, Lewes, Uckfield and surrounding villages, is proud to have spent five decades providing care in the right place, at the right time.

Today, St Peter & St James Hospice supports over 1,000 people each year, delivering care not only at the hospice itself, but also in people’s homes and through the Living Well Centre. Services include pain and symptom management, emotional support, respite care, and guidance for loved ones.

As Dr Helen McGee, Medical Director, explains:

“Hospice care is about living as well as possible, right to the end. Our care is holistic, it supports the patient and wraps around their loved ones too. All of this is provided free of charge thanks to the generosity of our supporters.”

With £6.9 million needed annually to run the hospice, and the majority of funding coming from donations and charity shops, community support remains essential

Help us be here for generations to come

The story of St Peter & St James Hospice began with a personal tragedy that inspired an enduring legacy. The site was founded by Susan Dinnage in memory of her husband, Jim, and their young son Peter, who died in childhood of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Initially established as a nursing home, the hospice evolved into a cornerstone of palliative care in Sussex.

To honour this golden anniversary, the hospice has launched a 50th Anniversary Campaign, with the goal of raising £50,000 to secure care for future generations. The appeal invites the whole community to get involved through:

  • The Big £50 Appeal
  • Community fundraisers
  • Corporate support partnerships
  • The 50 for £50k Club
  • Sponsor a room
